Planning and Building Permit Fee Exemption Program Expanded to Mitton Village

The Planning and Building Permit Fee Exemption Program has been expanded to include the Mitton Village Community Improvement Area (Mitton Street between George Street and Wellington Street; Wellington Street between Stuart Street and east of Mitton; and Ontario Street between Mitton Street and Shepherd Street) until December 31st, 2021.

The exemption allows applicants up to a 50% reduction on any planning application or building permit costs.

“With proven success in the Downtown and Waterfront Community Areas, the Fee Exemption Program has been expanded to Mitton Village to help to support existing businesses and encourage new investment,” explains Alan Shaw, Director of Planning & Building.

Between 2012 and 2015, fees for 60 permits and applications were waived, representing $5.3 million in construction value. Since its inception in 1996, the Planning and Building Permit Fee Exemption Program has been applied to over 250 permits, totaling in excess of $464,149 in waived fees for the Downtown and Waterfront Community Improvement Area.

This expansion is consistent with previous expansions of the program area and meets the objectives of the City’s Community Improvement Plan to encourage private investment in redevelopment and building rehabilitation within the Community Improvement Area.
