Wyoming, ON - Lambton County Library will launch the second phase of its MakerSpace project later this month, bringing the successful, open-access workshop concept to rural library branches located throughout the County.
Mobile MakerSpace will be introduced at a launch event to be held in the County Council Chambers at the County Administration Building in Wyoming on Wednesday, January 18. Local schools have been invited to attend the event and explore the resources available throughout the day, with an open house for the general public planned for 3:00 4:30 p.m. that afternoon. A total of 19 launch events are scheduled throughout the County during the months of January and February (see attached Launch Events poster for dates and locations).
"The Mobile MakerSpace will equip community members to design, prototype and manufacture items at their local library, using tools that would not otherwise be accessible or affordable to the general public", says Lambton County Warden Bill Weber. "The rollout of this new service demonstrates the commitment of the County of Lambton to facilitate innovation and responds to the challenges and opportunities of a world in which access to technology is critical to advancement."
The MakerSpace project was initiated in 2016 with the establishment of a permanent MakerSpace at Sarnia Library, offering patrons an opportunity to create content through various resources such as computers, a 3-D printer, laser-cutter, audio and visual devices, and traditional arts and crafts materials.
Since opening to the public in June of 2016, the permanent MakerSpace at Sarnia Library has attracted over 5,000 program attendees. Approximately 350 members of the public have been trained to use the technologies offered through eight workstations available at the MakerSpace. The program has also been successful in engaging new and diverse audiences to library services, resulting in many new library memberships at the Sarnia branch.
Financial support for the MakerSpace project has been provided through the partnership of the Ontario Library Capacity Fund offered through the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture & Sport and the County of Lambton.
