Centennial Park West Phase & Playground Open

By City Staff

Some of the fencing has been removed at the newly remediated Centennial Park, as most of the park becomes open to the public. With the cooperation of the contractor as work is finalized in the park, the public is now able to enjoy completed walkways, gardens and amenities.

The west phase of the Centennial Park Remediation Project has been completed with new features including a healing garden, reinstallation of the Victims of Chemical Valley Memorial Sculpture, and reinstallation of the Footsteps Tribute to Courage memorial.

In order to assist the contractor in fine grading and hydroseeding, fencing has been removed throughout most of the park. Park users are asked to stay off newly seeded areas to prevent damage to growing grass.

Within the east phase, new playground equipment, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Sarnia Bluewaterland, and new water and electrical features for the VON Memorial Wall and Garden have been completed.

The remediated park integrates measures for crime prevention through environmental design, developed with Sarnia Police Service. Crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) is a natural approach to eliminating opportunities for crime. CPTED features include clean lines of sight throughout the park, strategic lighting, and the elimination of areas of concealment for mischief.

Integrating CPTED, and the addition of surveillance cameras will help mitigate potential issues such as trespassing, mischief, and property damage.

Special care has been taken in the park layout. Pathways throughout the entire park exceed the requirements in the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, making the park easy to navigate with the use of wheelchairs and other support devices.

Work remaining includes installation of siding on the Suncor Agora building, concrete work around the building, restoration of parking lots, and completion of the new pedestrian crosswalk on Front Street. Park users are reminded to observe construction signage and stay clear of construction work. Construction strategies for the new boat launch continue to be developed between City staff, the contract administrator, and the contractor.

The City of Sarnia would like to thank residents for their cooperation in the final days of construction in the park and for their continued patience throughout this remediation project.

A formal reopening ceremony will be held Saturday, June 17. The Centennial Park Celebration and Everything Ontario Event runs from 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. with concerts beginning at 3:00 p.m. at the Suncor Agora Stage. The opening ceremony is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. (noon).
