Dogs

Dog Licensing

Dog owners in the City of Sarnia are required to licence their dogs, over the age of 6 months, annually in accordance with Regulation of Dogs and Cats By-Law.

2017 Dog Licence Fees
(January 1, 2017 – March 31, 2017)

Spayed or Neutered Dog - $36.00
Unaltered dog (not spayed or neutered) - $81.00 
Dangerous Dog (as designated by the City) - $365.00

2017 Dog Licence Fees - Late Fees 
(After March 31, 2017)

Spayed or Neutered Dog - $62.00
Unaltered dog (not spayed or neutered) - $107.00
Dangerous Dog (as designated by the City) - $400.00

A copy of the up-to-date Rabies Immunization Certificate must be provided at the time the licence is purchased.

A copy of the Spayed/Neutered Certificate must be provided at the time the licence is purchased in order to qualify for the Spayed/Neutered rate.

Dog tags can be purchased at Sarnia City Hall first floor Customer Service Department, the Humane Society, and local Veterinary Offices until March 31st of each year.

After March 31st, tags can only be purchased at City Hall Customer Service and the Humane Society.

Failure to license your dog each year may result in a fine.

Barking Dogs

Persistent Barking is not permitted at any time.

When a complaint is received about persistent barking, the complainant is encouraged to communicate with the owner of the dog. If that fails to produce satisfactory results, the Animal Control Officer will speak to the owner of the dog and if that does not improve the situation, the Animal Control Officer, with written evidence will issue a Provincial Offence ticket to the owner of the barking dog or assist the complainant to lay charges, which will necessitate a court appearance by the complainant.

Running at Large

Dogs must be on-leash at all times when off their property.

Dogs running at large may result in the owner being charged and/or the dog being impounded.

Dogs on Public Beaches

Dogs are not permitted on Public Beaches in accordance with the Public Parks By-Law.

Leash Free Dog Park

There is one leash free dog park in the City located within Blackwell Trails Park (Blackwell Road between Modeland and Michigan Roads).  The site, which is owned by Waste Management, contains a 3.5 acre fully enclosed leash free zone for exercising dogs

Animal Waste

Every owner of a dog shall immediately remove excrement left by the dog and dispose of it in a sanitary manner.
