Public Education and Fire Prevention

The Sarnia Fire Rescue Services is very active in both Fire Prevention and Public Education. The Fire Prevention Division provides a full range of services from site plan approval, plans review, inspections and fire cause determination. The Public Education officer provides fire safety programs for all ages in our community. We are involved in the Sarnia Lambton Risk Watch Program, TAPP-C, and the Older and Wiser program to name a few. We also operate a fire safety trailer that travels to community events and the schools. Every year we have in excess of 5000 students who learn about fire safety in this trailer. The fire safety trailer also attends community events where the message of fire safety is passed on to the community. The on-duty suppression crews assist in the delivery of the fire safety programs.

The Fire Prevention Division of the Sarnia Fire Rescue Service is made up of a Chief Fire Prevention Officer, 4 Fire Prevention Officers, and a Public Education Officer. The primary duty of the Fire Prevention Division is to be pro-active in the prevention of fire through Public Education, Code Enforcement, and Fire Investigation.  Code Enforcement is done through routine and compliant inspections. 2 of the Fire Prevention officers are Building Inspectors as well, so our Fire Prevention work commences at the time of construction for new buildings.

Fire investigations give us the opportunity to understand how fires start, progress, and how difficult they were to extinguish based on the materials in the fire area. This is very helpful in determining what type of education programs are required and if there was a fire code issue involved we can determine if a more extensive enforcement program is needed.
